Today at Out There

May 9, 2009

It’s been a busy day today – shipments galore!

We got in a shipment of DVDs: Noah’s Arc – Jumping the Broom, and then seasons one and two, Mulligans, Milk, and Dante’s Cove season 3.

Processed a box of videos from Pacific Sun Entertainment.

The bulk of the day was spent inputting and pricing a box of toys!  Nothing new, just replenishing stock.

So, I treated myself to some chocolate frozen yogurt for keeping myself moving and getting it all done.

Tomorrow is our second Eat Their Words which should be another round of great fun – this time with a Mother’s Day flair.  Be sure to be here at 4 pm so you can enjoy it for yourself.

Have a great weekend!

Today at Out There

May 4, 2009

The close of another day here at Out There.  A fair day.  A couple of our past employees showed up to say hello.  Good to catch up with them.

Ran the register most of the day.  Later in the day, as things wound down, Melissa and I ended up playing each other in Trouble and then invited a customer to join us.

Come to think of it – let’s make Sunday Board Game/Cards Day.  To anyone Out There interested in coming in – we’ve got Trouble, several decks of cards, SkipBo, and Pictionary (stay tuned on that one!!!)

8 am to 8 pm – that’s a lot of pitch!!!

I don’t know about you, but when I grew up, my family and I played cards until all hours of the night – still do.  We’d get to the point of stupid-slap-happy, anything that you say would make EVERYONE uproar in laughter!  And we’d play progressive rummy until we were stupid.

I miss those days.

If anyone else is of similar mindset, come on down.  Let’s get this going!

Sunday = Board Game/Card Day

Alright, time to head out of here.

5 Minutes of Fame (Open Mic) – May 2 at 4 pm

May 2, 2009

So, we’re doing an Open Mike night at the store this Saturday at 4pm. I’m going to suck it up and do a piece.

In all of my years of writing in a journal, there is only ONE entry that has stood out so prominently that I actually remember exactly which notebook it was written in.  Today, I read that entry.

I’m nervous about it, but I’m excited to “do one thing that scares me.”  Which means that I need to edit it. Make it pretty. I’ve read it to a few people and most at least feigned genuine interest in my reading it.

I’m excited to be doing something with my art! It’s an exciting feeling.

Every time I read this piece, I am ALWAYS taken aback my how it applies to my life today.  I some times wonder if I wrote the entry those years back so that I might be reminded of the message in the here-and-now.

I think it’s pretty powerful stuff, at least for me.

And Saturday I share it with the world.

Calendar of Events

May 1, 2009

5 Minutes of Fame (Adjusted for Inflation) - First Saturdays at 4 p.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first Saturday afternoon of each month, beginning May 2, will see an “open mike” event, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Performers looking to share their writings, scenes from upcoming plays, acoustic musicians, performance artists, or whoever signs up to perform will be given 5 minutes on the tiny stage at Out There. This event is free.
Eat Their Words - Second Saturdays at 4 p.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following the success of this fundraiser for KKFI, “Eat Their Words” will begin monthly performances on second Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. Showing that celebrity memoirs should not be tossed aside lightly, but thrown with great force, Kansas City “sublebrities” read selections from autobiographies and other words from the over-exposed, the over-wrought, and other people we are just plain over! While the event is free, donations are requested for KKFI, Kansas City’s Community radio station, and home to “The Tenth Voice,” the only local show covering gay and lesbian issues.

4N6 - Third Saturdays at 4 p.m.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An unusual performance opportunity for the Kansas City community, “4N6″ will celebrate the world of high school and college speech tournaments, also known as Forensics, giving the event its punning name. Co-owner Brian Heinen explains, “I participated in Forensics in high school, and when I graduated, it left a void. I no longer had that creative and performance outlet. I think other people may feel the same way, but in a more relaxed atmosphere, without the pressure of competition.” 4N6 will be held May 16 at 4:00 p.m.  Contact Brian at info@outthereonline.com for more information or to get involved.
PJ A.M. Toons – Saturdays 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. starting May 23
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Combine cartoons, sugary cereals, and Saturday morning and what do you have? A Pajama Party, obviously! Starting May 23, Out There will host a weekly celebration of classic animation each Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with an all-you-can-bear-to-eat cereal buffet. Remember, they don’t have to be what you wear to bed — they don’t even have to be yours — but those who show up in pajamas will receive a discount!

Meet the Artist

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beginning May 18, Out There will also host a month-long showing of work by Kansas City artist and actor Brad Shaw. Shaw describes his work as “everything from Afro-centric to abstract.” There will also be an opportunity to meet the artist and learn more about his art, which will include pieces on canvas and free-standing paintings and fiber works.
April 30, 2009
Hello and welcome to the Out There blog,
As you’ve probably noticed, there have been many changes going on at Out There.  For that reason, I’ve created this blog - to provide updates on new products, recount the going-ons and events here at the shop, and Coffee Corner where I’ll write whatever happens to be on my mind.
Be sure to check in regularly for a glimpse of the world of Out There through my eyes.
Brian
